Questions
Does this work with any YouTube video?
Yes, any video with captions.
Is it really free?
Completely free. No account, no limits.
Do I need the Obsidian Web Clipper or any plugin to use this?
No plugins required. Copy the transcript from 2outube and paste it directly into any Obsidian note. That said, the template above works great with Templater if you want to automate frontmatter creation.
Will the transcript include timestamps?
Yes. 2outube shows the full transcript with timestamps so you can reference specific moments in the video from your Obsidian notes.
Can I use this with Obsidian's Daily Notes or Zettelkasten system?
Absolutely. Paste the transcript into a daily note for fleeting captures, or create a dedicated literature note using the template above. The transcript text is plain text, so it plays well with any Obsidian workflow.
What if the video doesn't have captions?
2outube requires that the video has captions enabled — either auto-generated or manually added by the creator. Most YouTube videos have auto-captions. If a video has none, the transcript won't be available.
Can I get transcripts in other languages for Obsidian?
If the video has captions in multiple languages, 2outube can pull those too. This is useful for language learners keeping notes in their target language alongside English.
Is there a faster way to do this regularly?
If you watch a lot of YouTube, bookmark 2outube.com so it's one click away. Then just swap the URL whenever you find a video worth adding to your vault. No extension needed — the URL swap is the shortcut.
